Mountains, Mountains, Mountains

Cantabria is the next region across the North of Spain and boasts both beautiful Inland and Coastal areas. The most notable inland feature has got to be the Cantabrian mountain range. While the Capes of Mayor and Ajo provide fantastic scenery on the Coast. There’s some great beaches in this area, but luckily they’re really not crowded at all and offer a pleasant breeze coming in from the bay. Quite a lot of the area inland is taken up with the Picos de Europa, with Peña Vieja summit peaking at 2,613 m tall.
Given the high rainfall in this area, and the waters that flow from the melting ice up in the mountains make the landscape in this area luscious and green.

Green Spain

Asturias is possibly the most popular of the regions in Northern Spain and is often referred to as "green Spain”. Its Coast lies on the Bay of Biscay and the regions of Castilla y Leon, Cantabria and Galicia, border the area.
You will not find high-rise apartments and busy strips in this part of Spain, which I think make for a welcoming change in comparison to the Southern & Mediteranean Coastal towns.
Asturias offers lush green terrain, sometimes Mountainous and fabulous traditional Villages, although there are only just 3 main Cities. (Oviedo, Gijon & Aviles)
Try your hand at Hiking, Canoeing, fishing, Cave exploration or mountain climbing. I can truly recommend Asturias as a part of Spain you’ll never forget and most likely return to time and time again.

The Land of a Thousand Rivers

The first stop on our trip is Galicia, situated in the North West corner of Spain and bordering Portugal. Locals also know Galicia as “ the land of a thousand rivers” obviously due to the density of the rivers in the area. The region is terrific if you are inclined towards a more relaxed holiday as unlike many other coastal regions in Spain it is not a huge tourist destination, but has just as much if not more to offer.
Galicia is surrounded by low-lying mountain ranges and the coastal areas are a hotbed for fishing. Sandy shores are not really what you will find in most places here, but if you are looking for a true Spanish flavour then this is the place to visit.
Don’t leave without trying the local cuisine! Empanada is definitely one of my favourite dishes and can be meat of fish pie. In this region I’d go for the fish version, as you’re sure to have great produce.

So, it’s off to Spain we go for some Sun, Sand & Sangria

Whether you’re here visiting friends, a sun junkie or just want to soak up the culture then this blog should tell you all you need to know about everything… well most things. We’re going to start in the north west of the Country and work our way around the coast up to Barcelona on the north east coast. Then take a trip inland and visit some of the beautiful towns that are slightly off the beaten track.Spain has something for everyone, Sun for the sun lovers, architecture to die for, national parks and museums and some of the most successful sporting teams in the world, along with being a Country that is absolutely immersed in History.
